Relations to The Namesake
The research I put into discovering and learning more about Vietnam relates to a book that I read in english class. “The Namesake” was a book about a guy named Gogol who was born into a highly traditional Indian family, but soon later became very Americanized. He started to spend less time with his family, and he even changed his name. Gogol was losing his background everyday. He later had a change in his life when his father passed away. Gogol started to become interested in his culture even more, and he was sad that his father had to pass away just to make him feel more interested in his tradition.
I kind of saw this as a moment to realize that I should learn and research about my culture before it’s too late. I don’t want to have a moment like Gogol where he finally realizes the importance of his background and identity when someone in his family passes away. I want to be engaged in my culture now, so I decided this book is a great connection to what I am going through about finding my background/identity.
