Well let’s get the bad out of the way first. People and tourists that plan or visited Vietnam have told about scam stories. Locals selling goods on the streets in Vietnam are known for trying to scam tourists or even other locals for goods, making them pay more than usual price. It can be said that tourists and visitors are walking dollar sign to the local street sellers. Some sellers do not even give the right amount of change back, or they do not even give any change back. Some even offered to give chocolate back as change. These scam stories are just what people have been through when they went to Vietnam, but that is not why it should stop anyone from seeing the beauty of Vietnam.
With the bad stories I heard about Vietnam, I still want to visit Vietnam. Hearing these bad stories are more of what are the bad things to expect on a vacation in Vietnam, but that does not stop me from wanting to visit Vietnam. My expectations of Vietnam is what my parents told me about when they were younger. My parents told me that they would swim in the rivers or take their neighbors sugarcane. It seemed like a reasonable view on what I think I would see if I visited Vietnam. A more old fashioned lifestyle compared to the U.S. As time went on, I saw some videos about what the current lifestyle in Vietnam is. In the big cities like Saigon, use to be Ho Chi Minh, life seemed a lot like it is here in the U.S. Even the kids were dressed like kids in the U.S. Kids were wearing jeans, button-ups, and snapbacks. I was actually surprised. I know I should not have been surprised since it is 2014, but with the stories my parents told me, it just stuck with me that Vietnam was not as modern as I thought it would be. Today, the big cities like Ho Chi Minh are very modern. It is somewhat like the city life.
Ho Chi Minh city is probably the best place in Vietnam if you're looking to have a more modern theme vacation with a Vietnamese culture. Otherwise, the other parts of Vietnam are more traditional where you visit rice terraces and travel by boats.
