The traditional Vietnamese wedding is something that I am luckily to been a part of. My cousin got married in the summer of 2012 and the wedding was mostly done on Vietnamese tradition. Even though it was not the fully traditional wedding, it was a definite highlight of my life so far to be a part of something so beautiful.
I remembered the wedding day so vividly, because it was one of the best summers I had. It was probably the best summer to this date for me. I was lucky to be chosen to be the best man with my other cousin for my cousin’s wedding. My cousin wanted to have two best mans because he wanted to do something different. I am not sure if that is even original or normal to have two, but I said yes because who could say no?
The day began by waking up at around 8 in the morning to get ready. I got ready and put on a tuxedo that matches with the other best man. We had a color theme of silver with nice detailed designs on the vest. I can’t remember what it was, but we put a lot of time in picking out the right outfit. After I got ready, I went to my cousins house to prepare to go over to the brides house. When we got to the bride’s house, there was a ceremony where my cousin would ask permission to receive his wife. This was the traditional part that I saw in the wedding. Our family gave gifts to the other family that symbolized good luck, happiness, and wealth. After the ceremony, we went to take pictures near the art museum. Once we were done, I got a break from all of the wedding things that was happening that day. My break started at 3PM and I took a two hour nap then had to get ready for the reception party that started around 5:30PM.
At the beginning of the reception party all of my cousins took pictures together and it was just a great time for all of us to be together. I knew it was an important moment because we were all beginning to grow up and out our own ways. I’m a senior now and the cousins that I hung out with most of the time are in college or out of college working. I miss hanging out with them, so I enjoyed that moment as much as I could. Back to the reception, the groom and bride were taking pictures with everyone that came to the wedding in the beginning. After that was done, the bride had to change into another Vietnamese dress to get introduced by the host of the wedding reception. Shortly after that we just hung out for awhile then the groomsmen and bridesmaid had to walk around with the bride and groom to thank the guests for coming to the wedding. It was a fun moment, because we got to hear what others said to the newly married couple. The best speech was when we got to my grandparents table. My grandpa wished the couple best of luck and happiness. It was very emotional to see my grandpa giving out his speech.
Lastly, everything was done. The couple cut the cake after everyone was done eating and that’s when the party really started. The couple danced on the dance floor then from there everyone joined in. It was so much fun having friends and family on the dance floor. It was just a fun moment that I can’t forget.
Finally the night ended, and I was tired and went straight to bed when I got home. It was truly an amazing experience that day. It was just overall fun and loving with my family. A day that I can’t forget and still remember vividly to this day. Here are some pictures that were taken on the wedding day.
